How To Stain Kitchen Cabinets

Staining kitchen cabinets, and how you prepare to stain depends on what you are starting with.

Cherry Side Tables

Are you building your own cabinets? Are your cabinets unfinished in your garage waiting to be installed? Are your cabinets new and already installed, but in need of staining? Are you stripping your cabinets and then re-staining and refinishing them? Or are you going to try your hand at re-facing?

Cherry Side Tables

You will prepare and stain a bit differently for each of the above situations; however, there are some basic steps and supplies that are universal when you are staining kitchen cabinets.

List of Basic Supplies You Will Need:

a good stain (I like a good oil-based stain, like a Sherwin-Williams oil based wiping stain) stirring stick sand paper (150 to 320 grit) saw horses or work bench to stain on drop clothes/cardboard cotton rags carpet pieces or other tool to apply stain (the right carpet really works well to get into those nooks and crannies) clothes/shoes you don't mind getting dirty (the stain won't come out - it's a good idea to invest in a body apron that you don't mind getting ruined) dust mask/respirator face mask latex or rubber gloves lacquer thinner or acetone (to remove stain off of where you don't want it - like hinges or the floor; if you don't have these, you can use finger nail polish remover, most contain acetone) well ventilated area to work in area to set wood to dry
Step #1 - Remove Doors, Drawers, Hardware and Lay Flat

If you are building your own cabinets, staining them is simply a step in the building process. You can stain everything, and put finish on it too, before you ever put anything together.

If your cabinets are pre-built, try to remove as much hardware as possible (handles and hinges). It is much easier to put the hardware back on than to try and clean it later. If you can take the hardware off, number each piece, then also put that same number on the wood where the hardware sits - making sure it is inconspicuous.

You should also remove the doors and drawer fronts before you begin staining kitchen cabinets, if you can, so you can lay them flat. Again, if you remove hinges, etc., do so and number so it won't show on your finished product.

The advantage of having an item lying flat while you are staining kitchen cabinets is that the stain and finish won't run all over and create a look you don't want - sloppy. Who wants to put a lot of work, time, and effort into staining kitchen cabinets, just to see the finished product look sloppy and completely unprofessional? Learning how to stain kitchen cabinets means ending up with a stain job that looks beautiful and professional and says to the world that you know what you're doing. You want your cabinets to look like you paid a fortune, even if you didn't.

Step #2 - Look Your Pieces Over and Sand If Necessary

When first staining kitchen cabinets, look over the pieces you want to stain. Do they need to be sanded first? Most likely they are already sanded well, and you'll just have to sand out small scuff marks which resulted from handling them or installing the cabinets.

Use a fine grit sandpaper, 150, 220, or even higher. Once you begin staining kitchen cabinets, any marks you've missed in sanding will jump out at you. You can always sand out marks and scuffs after you've stained your kitchen cabinets, but that takes more time and energy, so try to do a good job of sanding initially.

Step #3 - Setting Up The Area Where You Will Be Staining Kitchen Cabinets - Remember Safety First!

It is a good idea to stain items on saw horses if you have them, or on any sturdy table or bench that is about waist high. As you learn how to stain kitchen cabinets, you will be glad you used a drop cloth or cardboard on your floor or on any area that you don't want stain on. You can use lacquer thinner or acetone to wipe up stain, but it doesn't always work (like you can almost never get stain out of clothes). Also, lacquer thinner or acetone might melt or ruin what the stain is sitting on. If you don't have lacquer thinner or acetone, use finger nail polish remover. It has acetone in it. Don't inhale the fumes of such products, or get them on your hands.

You'll also need to mask off any parts of the cabinets you don't want stained, such as the interiors.

Wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty, and/or a full body apron.

You should also wear latex or rubber gloves and safety glasses when you are staining kitchen cabinets. These precautions are not only for when you are learning how to stain your kitchen cabinets, but are necessary even if you become an expert. Safely is of the utmost importance.

ALERT: BEWARE OF DANGEROUS FUMES. Wearing a dust mask won't do any good against fumes. Only wear a dust mask if you are in the sanding process. You will either have to invest in a respirator face mask for your safety, or ensure that you are in an extremely well ventilated area, such as your garage with doors wide open, or both. Fumes from the chemicals used while you are staining your kitchen cabinets are extremely dangerous, not only to breathe in, but, if concentrated enough, they can cause an explosion. And, don't be fooled by water-based products. They can give off fumes and hazardous odors as well. Each product's danger level is different, but error on the side of caution. Knowing how to stain kitchen cabinets means knowing how to do it safely.

Step #4 - Applying The Stain

Once you know where you are going to be staining kitchen cabinets, and have yourself and your area prepared, open your stain can and stir well. This cannot be overstated enough. When the can sits for any length of time, the stain will separate and sediment (color) will sit at the bottom of the can. If you do not stir well, the stain you use from the top of the can will be much lighter than the stain you end up using at the bottom of the can (and at the end of your project). These results will not look good. The things you stain first will be much lighter than the last pieces you stain.

To apply the stain, one of the easiest tools to use are old carpet remnants. Cut them into approximately 4 x 3 inch rectangles. Dip one end of the carpet into your stain, then rub the carpet onto your wood. It doesn't matter if you go with the grain or against the grain at this point, you just want to make sure that you cover all surfaces. If you are doing intricate work, such as doors with groves or raised panels, be sure to get stain into corners. Over staining at this point is a good idea, because the excess will be wiped off. This is where the drop clothes and wearing an apron come in handy, because it can get pretty messy!!

After you apply stain to your piece, look it over to make sure you didn't miss any spots. Areas that are commonly missed in learning how to stain your kitchen cabinets include: grooves, door edges, drawer edges, or any corners - like where the raised panel corners meet the door frame.

Step #5 - Wiping The Stain Off - A Very Important Multi-Step In Ensuring Your Piece Looks Great

As you are first learning about staining kitchen cabinets, I suggest you wipe the stain off immediately. Most cans of stain suggest leaving the stain sit for 10 minutes, then wiping off the excess. I've found that this does not usually change the color, so why wait? Also, if you are staining kitchen cabinets that are already installed, or already built, and you can't lay pieces flat, your stain will run all over if you let it sit for any length of time. You will want to wipe it up as soon as possible.

If you want a darker piece of wood, purchase a darker stain color. The only time that waiting to wipe excess stain off will actually darken your piece significantly is if you can let it sit for over 30 minutes. This is really a false darkening, and the problem with it is that your stain is usually so dry by then that it's difficult to remove smudges and wipe off the piece properly. The stain ends up sitting on top of the wood, not soaking in. Use your own judgment. If you decide to wait the 10 minutes, do it on every piece to ensure consistency.

Actually wiping the excess stain off in itself is a two step process.

First, have several cotton rags at your disposal. Put a rag in each hand. Never touch your wood with bare or gloved hands alone after it's been stained, as it will leave a smudge mark. Wipe off the bulk of the excess stain. At this point it doesn't matter if you are going with the grain or not, you just want to get the big spots of stain wiped up.

The second step is a finishing type step in staining kitchen cabinets. Take another clean rag. Go back over your piece of wood, this time with the grain. The second rag takes more stain off, preventing smudge marks. The biggest enemy in staining is leaving smudge marks.

Following these two steps and not being afraid to use rags as needed will ensure that you don't leave any smudges. Look your piece over. If you have left any smudges, wipe off gently and blend color in with your cotton rag.

Step #6 - The Final Step In Staining - Set Your Pieces Aside To Dry

Now that you've learned how to stain kitchen cabinets, set your pieces aside to dry (or just let them hang there if they are already installed). You can lay your piece on a flat surface if only one side is stained. If your piece has multiple sides that are stained, you can lay it flat on something that allows for air circulation to the back, such as saw horses, or if you do enough staining, purchase a professional staining rack. One caveat: where the saw horses or rack touch the stained piece, smudge marks may be left. Before you finish a piece that has dried on such equipment, you may need to touch up that side.

You can also lean your piece against a wall to dry. When your stain is drying, it is best to let air get to as many sides that you have stained as possible. It's also okay to let fans run in the area where you are drying your piece. This helps it to dry faster and doesn't hurt the end result; however, never let fans run on a a piece that you've put finish on.

How long your piece has to dry depends on what type of stain you are using. Read the label and act accordingly.

ONE FINAL AND IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SAFETY AS YOU LEARN HOW TO STAIN KITCHEN CABINETS

Remember to hang your rags to dry, ensuring air movement around them as well. Too many times, bunched together wet staining rags have caused a tragic explosion resulting in fire and even death. Please be careful!!

You Are Now Ready For The Next Step - Finishing

Congratulations!!! You have learned how to stain kitchen cabinets and have completed your staining project!

After your pieces are completely dry, you are ready for the next step - putting a beautiful, clear finish on your beautifully stained kitchen cabinets!

And remember - HAVE A HAPPY KITCHEN!!!

Natural Twig Wedding Decorations

Sometimes the most simple decorations can be the most beautiful. Elements from nature often make the prettiest design ideas for a wedding. Something as simple as natural twigs can be used to enhance the style of your wedding in many creative ways.

Cherry Side Tables

For an outdoor wedding, it feels very harmonious to decorate with elements from your surroundings. After all, nothing is more majestic than the beauty found in nature. This same concept can also be used to bring the outdoors into an indoor venue, which can be a stunning effect.

Cherry Side Tables

There are countless ways that simple twigs can be used to have a big impact at a wedding. One of the most impressive ideas is to use natural branches to handcraft a canopy or Chuppah for your ceremony. For the most earthy look, allow the intertwined twigs and branches to speak for themselves. This is perfect if the bride will be barefoot with a simple dress and delicate handcrafted bridal jewelry.

Natural does not have to be so earthy, though, if your wedding is going to be dressier. That same canopy of branches can be spectacular when adorned with flowers. An array of white flowers will really stand out against the color of the branches. You can also have the florist weave in some vines amongst the twigs.

Once you move on to the reception, you will find many creative uses for the twigs. As your guests arrive, have them greeted by a handmade tree bearing the escort cards. The cards can be shaped like leaves and suspended from the branches of your "tree". To make it more festive, add a few flowers to the twigs.

If you are planning a spring wedding, a wonderful idea for reception decorations would be to create little nests from the twigs. They can be placed on the tables as centerpieces (especially as part of one of the natural landscape table designs that are so popular right now). You can also use the little twig nests as accents on side tables, such as the guest book stand.

The twig nests can be decorated in a few different ways. You can find some really lovely little feather birds to perch on the edge of the nests. Or you can keep it more simple by adorning the nests with just a few flower buds and perhaps some blue speckled "eggs". If you would like to make your nests a bit fancier, think about weaving some strands of faux pearls into the twigs. It will be as if little wedding birds picked up some pearl bridal jewelry to incorporate into their nests: very sweet.

There is no need to stop there. Branches or twigs can also be used as part of striking floral displays. Nothing says spring like branches of cherry blossoms, either real or paper. You can also go out and find your own natural elements to incorporate into your centerpieces, such as pussywillows or branches of bright yellow forsythia.

One of the most appealing things about using twigs and branches in your wedding design is that each one will be unique. It is great to get away from cookie cutter weddings that all look the same. When you bring the beauty of nature to your wedding, you will be sure to create a look that is as original as it is lovely.

Outdoor Rocking Chairs - A Classic Choice in Patio Decor

Want to recapture a bit of the old country past? Get yourself a rocking chair, get on your porch and start rocking. They are an extremely relaxing way to while away the day and think back to how things used to be.

Cherry Side Tables

So what does one look for in an outdoor rocking chair? Well, they are a little more limited in materials than their indoor cousins, but that doesn't make them any less attractive. As a matter of fact, teak, cherry, and cedar woods are the most commonly used materials in outdoor rocking chairs, and are all beautiful woods.

Cherry Side Tables

You will have to consider the style of outdoor rocking chair you want to have at your home. While you may think a rocking chair is a rocking chair, you couldn't be more wrong. Some have a more southern style, often made of white wicker and flowery cushions. A more rustic one hair may be made out of tree branches and logs that still have some of the bark on them for effect. Even if you decide on a simple, and typical looking one, you still have to decide if it will be natural, painted, stained or what else will be done to the surface. And we didn't even begin to look into which way the back slats were going, up and down, or side to side.

Comfort is extremely important in outdoor rocking chairs. Without it being comfortable you will not want to spend hour after hour rocking away on your porch. So, before laying out a lot of money on some, make sure they are going to offer the ride you are hoping for. If they are not cushioned, the seat and back should be contoured to offer a more comfortable fit for your body. If you are getting cushions on your outdoor rocking chairs, make sure they fit right. An ill fitting cushion that is sitting on top of the seat and back of outdoor rocking chairs could slide around under you and end up making you more uncomfortable than if you didn't have them.

The other portion of this part of the equation is how the chair rocks. It needs to smoothly rock back and forth without any skips or weird spots where it may not have been properly formed. Can you lean all the way back without the chair feeling like it's going to topple over? You should be able to. You should always feel secure in outdoor rocking chairs that you are going to stay rocking, not topple over.

When you are ready to invest in outdoor rocking chairs, you should know they are not cheap, at least the good ones. Good rocking chairs will put you back a pretty penny, but you have to realize that you are paying for quality. Hand created outdoor rocking chairs, that have attention to detail are the ones that have higher price tags, but also a longer lasting and more comfortable experience

The different material and finishing options create hall chest options of a wide variety of styles, which is great for you because then you can find one to match the present décor of your home without much trouble. Like, if your space has an antique feel to it, then you can also get one with that same vibe that features elegant scrollwork and carvings. Like, you can display decorative things on its table top including vases, or, you could also use it as a nice way to show off your family with a family photo. One will normally have drawers and sometimes cabinets, giving you a nice area where you can store different things including bedding, linens, clothes, and any other special keepsakes that you might have.

So, if your hallway is in need of a decorative boost, turn to a lovely hall chest to get the job done. And, not only is it pleasing to the eye, but it is also very practical and one furnishing that you can't go wrong when you decide to purchase it.

Angle Grinder Safety

Angle grinders are versatile and useful machines that can be used for grinding, cutting, polishing, and sanding. They turn some of the most demanding DIY tasks into easy chores. However, it is important to be aware of the dangers of using this tool, and take the appropriate safety precautions.

Cherry Side Tables

The most obvious danger to be aware of is the spinning cutting disk. Spinning at between 5,000 to over 10,000 rpm, catching any part of your body in the disk will result in trouble, and i don't mean just a few torn clothes! Make sure that you are standing with the disk facing away from the body at all times, and ensure that a firm grip is always maintained on the angle grinder's handle. Failure to do so could result in an unwanted trip to the hospital.

Cherry Side Tables

Gloves and long sleeves are also essential when using this tool. Without them, it is not uncommon for shards of metal to get caught in the hands and arms. The best kind of gloves are usually the thick leather ones. Try to avoid loose fitting clothes as the sleeves are liable to get caught in the spinning disk. Since the disk is usually composed of a light-weight material, skin rashes are more common than cuts. Even so, these injuries can still be highly sore!

The final, and most important piece of protection gear are eyes and face protection. Goggles should be of the indirect vented design; avoid the direct vented variants since these can let small shards of metal through the openings at the side of the goggle. The last thing you want to see in your life before you are blinded is your angle grinder, so make sure you get the correct type!

Safety is paramount when using an angle grinder. While the type of injuries sustained by one may not be as severe as circular saw injuries, it is still prudent to wear the correct safety equipment and know how to correctly hold the tool.

Decorate Your Wedding With Natural River Rocks

One of the hottest trends in weddings these days is to use elements that feel organic and natural. For a design element that can feel both earthy and Zen, check out river rocks. These smooth little stones can be used in a surprising number of ways to add a wonderfully natural feeling to your wedding.

Cherry Side Tables

River rocks are a terrific addition to many types of wedding décor. Of course they are perfect if you are being married by a river or stream, but they are equally at home in rustic lodges, backyards, and city lofts. An opulent ballroom is about the only type of wedding venue where the natural stones may look out of place.

Cherry Side Tables

You can begin introducing the river rocks right in your marriage ceremony. There is a charming ritual that some couples are choosing instead of the traditional unity candle. At the start of the ceremony, each guest is handed a river rock to hold. They are then asked to say a blessing or make a wish over the rock, and at the conclusion of the ceremony, the assembled wishes of the congregation are placed into a special vessel. You can make the rite even more special by writing something on the rocks, such as your initials and wedding date or a short line from a favorite romantic poem.

The river rock unity ceremony is a perfect addition to an outdoor wedding. It will fit right in with the type of wedding where the bride is wearing a simple flowing gown and handmade jewelry. The naturally free-form style of handmade keishi pearl wedding jewelry is a wonderful complement to the earthy stones. You can also think about using a row of river rocks down each side of the aisle to define the walkway.

A very pleasing and easy idea for your escort cards is to use a metallic pen to write the name of each guest on a smooth stone. It is the ultimate DIY project; just be sure that whoever wields the pen has good handwriting. Give the escort card table more flair by arranging the river rocks over a bed of wheatgrass or a woven mat. It is a low-key and yet elegant way to display your escort cards.

The centerpieces will lend themselves to the river rock idea wonderfully. You can use a bunch of the smooth stones to anchor the floral arrangements in clear vases. Another idea is to let the river rocks themselves stand alone as a decorative element. Arrange a trio of low clear or white vessels in the center of each table. Fill one with river rocks and the other two with natural elements such as moss or sand. It is a very chic Zen centerpiece design.

There are certain types of flowers and other items that combine with the river rocks in a very harmonious way. Look for things with an earthy and natural feeling, such as branches and twigs, vines, moss, and berries. Low flowering succulent plants look fantastic when paired with smooth stones. You can also think about cherry blossoms, pussy willows, and even orchids arranged in a loose and unstructured way.

It is actually pretty amazing that something as basic as a smooth stone can be used in so many ways to decorate your wedding. The humble river rock is right in line with the organic and "green" wedding trend, and it is also nice because it can easily be arranged to look great with no prior experience. For any bride hoping to give her wedding a modern earthy feeling, smooth river rocks are the perfect addition.

Paul and I are reaching down from Herring Bay aboard Petrel, bound for Chesapeake Beach, Md., a community that lines a sandy strip of waterfront on the Western Shore, just below Holland Point. Behind us the whitecaps are scribbling haiku stanzas across the water and gulls skim the waves like so many scholars trying to decipher the words. The late winter sky is flat and blue. The air is cold. I had promised Paul a short sail, and he's grumbling about the definition of the word "short."

Cherry Side Tables

"It's more of a concept than an exact measurement," I say. He remains unconvinced that winter sailing is worth the effort.

Cherry Side Tables

Now we can see a couple of high-rise buildings-the Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa to the south, a pink beach condo to the north-and between them a row of waterfront houses strung like beads. Farther up the shoreline, we can just make out the fishing pier and half-mile-long boardwalk at North Beach. The two towns, which run together, are like the Minneapolis-St. Paul of the Bay-one boasts a big hotel and charter-fishing fleet and the other a boardwalk and public beach.

We pick up the marker due east of Fishing Creek and come about, dropping sail and hoping that Bubba, our cranky engine, sees fit to take us the rest of the way in. We're heading for the Rod 'N' Reel's marina basin. It's the only place in town that can handle masted vessels, like Petrel, and other tall boats. A fixed bridge with a 10-foot clearance blocks the rest of the way into Fishing Creek, where more slips are available for boats able to negotiate the clearance and bulkheads and finger piers offer shelter to one of the largest charter-fishing fleets on the Bay.

Most people will tell you that they come to Chesapeake Beach to fish, either off their own boat or aboard one of the four dozen or so charterboats that routinely operate from the Rod 'N' Reel or Abner's Crab House, just up Fishing Creek. But there's another source of silver to be had hereabouts. Slot machines of one sort or another have been a focal point at the "Beach" (as it's invariably called by locals) for nearly a century, drawing avid and casual gamers alike to this tiny Bayside resort. Of course, Paul and I wouldn't know about any of that. We come here for the food-today that means a plate of ribs at Smokey Joe's Grill. Sometimes you just gotta have 'em.

We tuck Petrel into a slip and step ashore. To say that the Rod 'N' Reel anchors the town of Chesapeake Beach is no stretch. It occupies the Bay front on the south side of Fishing Creek, as well as a good portion of the creek front inside the bridge. The family-run complex offers world-class dining, over three hundred protected slips, a launch ramp-and now a hotel, the Chesapeake Resort Hotel & Spa. The marina office does the booking for most of the independently owned charter-fishing boats that run in and out of the creek. The Rod 'N' Reel restaurant, overlooking the marina, offers an enticing menu of fresh seafood and stages lavish weddings and gala fundraisers in opulent splendor. Next door, Smokey Joe's serves up saucy barbecue ribs and chicken. A casual dock bar straddles the waterfront between the restaurant and the hotel. Patrons of the latter have a sweeping view of the Bay, as well as access to a state-of-the-art exercise room, an indoor pool and sauna, and a fully staffed health spa that includes massage and rejuvenating facials. They also have ready access to over two hundred instant bingo machines, a traditional bingo hall and Keno.

"Imagine that," says Paul. We've poked our heads into the hotel lobby, where the siren call of a massage has caught Paul's attention. Working Petrel's tiller can be such labor, he tells me. "I think a nice massage would soothe my soul, don't you?" he directs this question to the attractive hotel receptionist, who assures him that marina guests are welcome to partake of the spa facilities. Wouldn't you know, there's an immediate opening for a half-hour massage, if Paul would be inclined to pony up the required . Before I can say, "Whose wallet?" Paul has been whisked away into a lush little chamber for a rejuvenating rub down. When he reemerges, he's downright radiant. "How's the shoulder?" I ask. "Ka-ching!" he says, pulling the arm of an imaginary slot machine.

Some would say that slot machines built this little town. That's not true. Chesapeake Beach is the culmination of a series of resort-development schemes in the latter part of the 19th century. In the shadow of the new hotel sits an old railway station, the terminus of the original rail line that brought the first visitors from the summer swelter of Washington, D.C. Otto Mears is credited with laying the tracks and conjuring up the waterside amusement park that went with them. In 1900, when his railroad opened for business, families could enjoy the healthy Bay breezes and partake of a variety of attractions, including a large bathing beach and a small-scale seaside train. By 1916, the death-defying Great Derby roller coaster was soaring over the heads of terrified parents, offering cheap thrills to all comers. They apparently came in droves.

The resort town that sprouted from the surrounding dunes saw plenty of traffic. Tourists filled the luxurious Belvedere Hotel and nearby boarding houses. Soon, the new prosperity spread to the newly platted town of North Beach, where hundreds of small vacation houses offered cooling Bay breezes and plenty of entertainment to big city residents eager to escape the summer heat. A few visitors built year-round residences and decided to stay put, creating a pair of permanent beach-side communities. But eventually the charms of a rickety wooden roller coaster and a netted swimming area (that could never be entirely free of stinging jellyfish) began to peter out.

The Great Depression no doubt contributed to the towns' decline, as did the increasing availability of automobiles. Car ferries crossing the Bay put the jellyfish-free Atlantic beaches within relatively easy reach. Compounded by dwindling regional revenues from tobacco and seafood, the financial decline of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach was sobering. When slot machines took hold in the 1930s, they seemed like a godsend to the strapped communities.

Paul and I stand on the dock, looking out across the Bay. I can just imagine the parade of boats roaring over the water into town back in its gambling heyday. I had hoped to find people who remembered that period and could tell me about Chesapeake Beach's days as "Little Atlantic City," but most of those people are, one way or another, gone now. Indeed, the closest I came was Little Buddy Harrison of Tilghman, Md.

"We swapped fishing captains back and forth," Harrison told me. "Big fishing fleet over there. Played 'em in baseball. And plenty of folks went there to party. Easier to get there by boat than by car. The kids went to the amusement park while their parents played the slots. I remember that big old roller coaster from when my dad took me there some-time in the early sixties." I told Harrison that I could remember one waterman telling me that he learned how to drive a boat by ferrying his parents home from their nights on the town. "Don't know who that would be in particular," Harrison said, "but I imagine it could be true of any number of fellows."

The party traffic slowed considerably in 1968 when slot machines were out-lawed in Maryland. Then in 2001, as a result of a challenge by Rod 'N' Reel's owner Gerald Donovan, the court ruled that the business's Lucky Tab machines were legal because they used pre-printed cards that mirrored the mechanics of a bingo game-a perfectly legal church-sanctioned way to part people from their money-even though they were nearly indistinguishable from slot machines. Unlike a traditional game of bingo, however, these instant bingo machines-also known as pull-tab machines-gave players the results instantly and spit out paper receipts instead of coins to winners. Pretty soon hundreds of the pull-tab instant bingo machines were helping to attract thousands of visitors back to the Beach.

Now all of that seems about to change. Last year, Maryland voters approved a new gambling law that allows state-controlled slot machines in a few locations. Ironically, though, that same law may put an end to gaming in Chesapeake Beach by outlawing instant bingo machines, which would be competition to the state-sanctioned slots. Pull tab and instant bingo proponents of course lobbied to keep the machines legal, but ultimately they failed-at least for now. Barring the passage of a bill introduced in February that would give instant bingo machines an extension until 2010 in Anne Arundel and Calvert counties (the only two counties that allow commercial bingo), the machines will become illegal statewide in July. Traditional bingo will continue, but that's no comfort to the city of Chesapeake Beach, which stands to lose a significant source of tax revenue. And two Beach businesses-Rod 'N' Reel and Traders Seafood, Steak & Ale-of course will lose one of their major draws.

Paul and I decide to take a walk to build up an appetite. I offer to buy him a beer at Abner's Crab House, which is not too far from the Rod 'N' Reel dock. We head inland and cross Bayside Road, which runs north-south through town.

Bobby Abner started catching and selling crabs when he was a kid. He ultimately ratcheted his crab-catching acumen into a thriving business that today employs nine family members, who keep the steamers full at the waterfront crabhouse and bar that backs up to Fishing Creek. Dockage is available on a first-come-first-served basis, but there always seems to be room for everyone. Alas, Paul and I are ahead of the season, and Abner's isn't open yet. We can see workers scrubbing table tops and mopping floors. We are a weekend too early, they tell us. "I told you it was too cold to go sailing," Paul says.

We backtrack and head north on the main road. Traders is on our left. "They have beer here, too," I say. A small bank of instant bingo machines sits on one side of the bar, and folks are already planted in front of the them. "Oh they're a draw, all right," says Traders' hostess when we ask about the popularity of the machines. "If you win, you take the tab up to the bartender and he'll cash it out for you." Paul and I watch for a bit. Every now and then someone gets up and saunters over to the bar.

"At least with the slot machines you got some exercise pulling down the handle to play," says "Uncle Roy" Leverone. The only exercise instant bingo players get is feeding in coins-and occasionally walking up to the counter for a pay-out. Leverone is a retired charter-fishing captain who's been hanging around the Beach most of his life. Rod 'N' Reel's assistant dockmaster Darrell Noyes had suggested we look him up if we wanted to talk to one of the old-timers, which is how we found ourselves in Leverone's workshop, up the road from the Beach and not far from the water.

Leverone's never been convinced that gambling is such a good idea. But the bottom line is he's seen the machines come, and he hopes to see them go. For him, it's the Bay that makes the town what it is. That's the real draw, and fishing is the common denominator. "This is probably the biggest fishing fleet on the Bay that operates out of one place, under one umbrella," he says. "Up there in Deale [Md.], you've got plenty of charterboats, but they're all independent. Down here everyone works together, and it's all coordinated by the Rod 'N' Reel."

Last year, Leverone sold his boat, Uncle Roy, but he still works occasionally as a relief captain on other boats. When he's not on the water, he's in his workshop crafting furniture. A newly finished cherry table gleams in the sunlight that slants through the windows. Nearby, another side table stands on graceful tiptoe legs. Children's rockers sit atop a cluttered table-one is in the shape of a wooden airplane, with a spinning propeller. On another table lie boxes filled with fishing reels. "I'm sorting through these," Leverone says. "Getting ready for the flea market. Every year I get rid of more stuff. No sense hanging on to it. I don't use it."

Leverone starts talking about life on the water, sharing stories of his chartering days. "I spent summers here when I was a kid," he says, waving a hand generously toward the water. "I had a construction company for a while, then I sold the business and moved here permanently about thirty years ago. Ran fishing charters." A lot of day-trippers came to Chesapeake Beach, drawn by the water. Sometimes they'd climb aboard one of the head boats or sign up for a private charter. Sometimes they'd rent a little skiff and go off on their own.

"Some of them didn't know what they were doing. . . ." Leverone leans forward, for emphasis and settles into a story about a man and his young daughter who were caught too far offshore in their rented rowboat by a summer squall. Leverone and a friend, who were out fishing, had been caught in the storm too, but rode it out easily. The man and his daughter were not as fortunate. After the storm had blown through, Leverone and his friend spotted the pair, clinging to their overturned boat and shouting for help. They pulled them out, retrieved their boat and set them back on land. The man was so upset, Leverone says, that he made a dash straight for his car, completely forgetting his daughter until the watermen shouted after him. "No telling about people sometimes," Leverone concludes.

"No telling," Paul says.

It's late afternoon and Paul and I have wandered back to the Rod 'N' Reel. The wind is cold. Even the sun, falling fast now, is cold. We tuck into Smokey Joe's and wedge ourselves into a booth near the bar. Paul begins to flirt with the waitress. Smokey Joe's waitresses are delightfully sassy, and Paul just loves that. We order ribs.

Later, licking sticky bits of barbecue sauce from our fingers, we head back to the dock. A crowd has gathered in front of the pull tabs in the Rod 'N' Reel. Come July, they'll be gone, and fishing, food and fun will be all Chesapeake Beach has to offer, with a little wholesome sass on the side. Treasure enough in my book. As far as I'm concerned, baiting up and dropping a line overboard is as much gambling as I can handle, and from the look of things in Chesapeake Beach, there will still be plenty of that going on. Paul says he'd come back just for the back rub. I'll have to try that next time.

Where to Eat in Austin Texas

Austin, Texas has some incredible restaurants and it is not just barbecue, although that is awesome. In fact, let us start with that stereotypical cuisine. Out in the middle of nowhere in the southern most part is a little shack. And this shack has attracted Presidents and country folk alike. The Salt Lick has some of the best barbecue that you will ever try. The meat is slow cooked all day long in a mustard based sauce and the sides like hearty potatoes and sweet corn are served in heaping portions. You sit at their picnic type tables and eat until your sides split and still most are tempted to buy some of their sauce to take home with them.

Cherry Side Tables

On the flip side, they also have an absolutely fabulous sushi restaurant run by a former Iron Chef contestant. Uchi has sushi and sashimi combinations that you have never dreamed of before. I went with friends and I normally hate eel but they persuaded me to try it here and oh my goodness it was so good that I ordered an extra helping. We are talking about sashimi with vanilla sauce and other unusual combinations. It is a bit pricey and you should definitely call ahead for reservations but it is so worth it.

Cherry Side Tables

Head all the way north into the Texas hill country and you will find a charming little cottage. It looks like it was picked up and placed there directly from Ireland. And inside you will find the family that runs it. They are warm and friendly. Do not mistake this for pub fare there. At Emeralds, you will find chateau briand, duck in a cherry sauce, and delicious home made soda bread with hand churned butters in various flavors.

If you are simply in the mood for something cool and refreshing, stop in for Amy's ice cream. Just be sure to bring your id because many of the flavors contain alcohol. This place is so popular that you may have to stand in line for your scoop.

And for yummy desserts stop by Chez Zee. The cakes are all home made and very rich and delicious. The portions are rather large as well so you may want to bring some friends to help you enjoy them. Their carrot cake is infamous, as is their challah bread creme brulee french toast.

As you can see, Austin has a very diverse blend of restaurants to try. These are just a few of the amazing places that we love to eat when we visit.

Amish Dining Room Furniture - Traditions and Gatherings

The dining room is one of the rooms where the Amish pay particular attention. It is one of the places where the entire family can gather and it is considered to be a place to treasure where memories, conversation and good food are the order of the day. These families consist of a core grouping of parents and children sometimes between 7 and 10 of them plus older family members such as widowed family and grandparents. This means that the dining room furniture needs to be built to last.

Cherry Side Tables

As a result the Amish go through a painstaking traditional process in order to be able to create both high quality and lasting furniture for themselves and for those that have an appreciation for fine hand crafted furniture. These heirloom quality pieces reflect the very nature of the Amish community in their utility, quality and simplicity.

Cherry Side Tables

The pieces are made from the finest wood, and craftsmanship. It is an essential room and the pieces are picked out and decided on often time's months in advance of the wedding. This is one of the core pieces of furniture that are essential in the home. Dinning room tables are not just used for the family at meal times but also for church functions, and holidays that involve community participation.

Thanks to a growing awareness of the need for family which many in modern society have lost over the past several generations there has been a movement to return to gathering at meal times despite hectic and busy schedules.

As a result, individuals are taking pride and notice in picking out quality dining room furniture that is going to provide them with a warm and comfortable place to gather for meals while providing them the close atmosphere they are looking to return to and provide them with enough space to entertain.

Thanks to this growing interest the number of furniture shops in the Amish community have started to grow and since Amish furniture is usually made to order there are a number of different elements that you can choose from when picking out your own dining room set. For example, you can decide usually from a listing of what the shop provides the size, style, shape, even wood and finish that is used on your furniture.

You will find these types of custom orders either by going to the Amish community and purchasing directly or looking into middlemen which are partnered with the Amish in order to sell to outside communities. Styles include Windsor, Queen Anne, Shaker, French Country, Hoosier, Mission and a host of other styles including contemporary. Woods include oak, cherry, maple, pine and walnut. In addition because the furniture is custom made you can choose the types of supports and the shape of the top so you can have a pedestal support, or four legs or trestle. For tops you can choose round, oval, octagonal, even square or leaf styles which include stow leaf, separate center leaves or side drop styles.

Home Vegetable Gardening Tips For Beginners Is A Growing Experience

Home gardening is not just a hobby these days. The fact that the economy in most places isn't in a great position means we need to either make more money or find ways to save money and home gardening is one way.

Cherry Side Tables

Take the time to learn a home gardening tips for beginners like my wife and I have done over the past few years and you can not only save money on the grocery bills but you can also start saving seeds from your vegetable garden, even if your veggie garden is a container garden like our first few were.

Cherry Side Tables

Tomatoes are the perfect vegetable/fruit to grow for beginner gardeners. Especially if you happen to love tomatoes as much as our family does. We eat tomatoes with everything, pretty much. Even with breakfast if I have eggs and bacon. Not so much if I have cereal but definitely with lunch and dinner.

During the summer months we have a variety of tomatoes growing that we use however we grow enough to make preserves we can use all year long.

Some of the tomatoes we enjoy eating and growing are:

BeefStake Tomatoes for the dinner plate and hamburgers.
Cherry Tomatoes go well in salads and I love cutting them in half and sprinkling them through the salads.
Romana Tomatoes are perfect for Jenny's spaghetti sauce. We love spaghetti and eat it at least twice a week.

Those are just a few of the tomatoes we enjoy and grow. It seems that each year we are adding just one more type of tomato to our vegetable garden.

When we first started our home garden as beginners we didn't get everything right but that's why it's so great to have access to the Internet and an unlimited supply of home gardeners willing to share their gardening tips with beginners, like we still are in so many ways.

The important thing to remember when vegetable gardening, whether in containers or in-ground, is to start small and slow so you don't become overwhelmed with all the things you should know.

Home Vegetable Gardening Tips For Beginners

There are a few things about vegetable gardening you need to know and you will do a whole lot better than if you didn't know.

1. Prepare the soil.

The soil needs to be prepared to grow vegetables whether you're going to start with container gardening or right in your backyard.

This means you want soil that is healthy, something that wasn't in our yard. We had to add some compost but good top soil will work fine. We even added some peatmoss to loosen the clay type soil we have. Today, after a couple of years of growing and ammending the soil I can did up my vegetable garden with a table spoon. The first year our garden soil was like concrete and took all my energy to break it for a garden bed.

2. Give Your Garden Lots of Direct Sunlight

This is where I made my first mistake as a beginner gardener. I put the vegetable garden where I could see it from my home office which was great for me but not so good for the veggies. They just didn't get enough direct sun for long enough each day to produce really well. Glad I started with a very small garden.

We moved our garden the following year, to the south and sunniest side of our yard during the summer months. Our vegetable garden the follow year was twice the garden with no more work, just lots of direct sunlight.

3. Water Your Vegetable Garden

Your home vegetable garden is going to need water. The hotter it gets that more water your veggies will want and the better they will produce.

Note: If you are starting your vegetable garden as a container garden, using big pots, you need to watch how you water them. You can actually drown your plants if you don't have proper drainage. At the same time they can dry out really fast in pots so you may have to find a way to irrigate them if no one is home during the day.

Having a home vegetable garden is a great way for beginner gardeners to save money, gain a new hobby and even to eat healthier products, if you don't use pesticides. So be sure you go green. You body and taste buds will thank you.
